Is Image Compressor free to use?

Yes. Image Compressor is free, has no usage cap and does not require an account. There is no paid tier that unlocks extra output.

Does my data get uploaded to a server?

No. The tool is a JavaScript function that runs inside your browser tab. Nothing you paste or drop in is transmitted, logged or stored by us.

Do I need to create an account?

What quality setting should I use?

Between 70 and 80 percent is the usual sweet spot for photographs — a large size reduction with differences that are hard to see at normal viewing distance. Flat graphics and screenshots tolerate lower values.

Should I use WebP or JPEG?

WebP is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller at equivalent quality and is supported by every current browser. Keep JPEG only where a downstream tool cannot read WebP.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read with the browser's File API, drawn to a canvas and re-encoded in memory. There is no network request and no copy on any server.

Why is my compressed PNG not much smaller?

PNG is lossless, so the quality slider does nothing. Reduce the dimensions instead, or convert the image to WebP, which supports both lossless and lossy modes.

Does compression remove EXIF data?

Yes. Re-encoding through a canvas drops metadata including GPS coordinates and camera details, which is usually a privacy benefit.

When people use it

Preparing images for a CMS

A 4MB phone photograph on a landing page delays the largest contentful paint badly. Resizing to 1600px and re-encoding to WebP usually cuts it by more than ninety percent.

Handling confidential screenshots

Screenshots often contain customer names or internal dashboards. Because compression runs locally, they never leave the machine.

Known limits

Re-encoding a lossy image is generational: each pass discards more detail. Always compress from the original.
PNG output is lossless, so quality has no effect; only the resize reduces its size.
