How long should a title tag be?

Roughly 50 to 60 characters. Google truncates by pixel width, around 580px on desktop, so a title full of wide characters gets cut earlier than a narrow one.

How long should a meta description be?

About 150 to 160 characters. It is not a ranking factor, but it is the sales line under your result, so write it to earn the click.

Do I need both Open Graph and Twitter tags?

Open Graph covers most platforms including Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and WhatsApp. X falls back to Open Graph but respects twitter:card for the layout, so including both is worth the four extra lines.

Why does my social preview not update after I fix the tags?

Platforms cache the preview they last scraped. Use the sharing debugger for that platform to force a refresh; the change is otherwise picked up on the platform's own schedule.

What does the canonical tag do?

It tells search engines which URL is the definitive version of the page, consolidating signals when the same content is reachable at several addresses. It should point at the page itself unless you are deliberately consolidating a duplicate.
